Dreams come true for Coldplay fans on a wet night in Cardiff

-

COLDPLAY became the latest big name band to wow fans at a soldout Principality Stadium last night.

The band, led by Chris Martin, will perform a second gig tonight.

The two nights in Cardiff are the only UK dates they are performing as part of their A Head Full Of Dreams Tour and fans flocked to see them.

Tickets for the first night sold out in minutes, and a second night was then announced.

Brit-alt rockers Embrace were the support act.

Their set started with the album’s title track A Head Full of Dreams and was followed by their huge early hit Yellow. They also treated fans to their 2002 hit The Scientist.

Lead singer Chris Martin told the packed crowd: “We haven’t been in Wales for a long, long time and that’s cos we’ve been rehearsing for 17 years to make the best show we’ve done.”

Fans were able to watch the gig with the roof closed after a change of heart from organisers.

Despite heavy rain starting in the afternoon, at 3.45pm a stadium spokesperson said the roof would be opened in time for the gig, but less than two hours later an announcement was made that organisers had changed their minds and would close it to keep fans dry.

With new restrictions of items that can be taken into the stadium, many were stocking up on lastminute ponchos are they headed to the gig.

Others faced long delays getting to the gig.

With two hours to go before the gig, there was stop-start traffic for 12 miles for people getting into Wales over the Severn crossing.

Fans travelled from across the country, UK and even the world to see the band.

Superfan Hyeyoung Jeong was visiting Cardiff for the fist time from her home in South Korea.

She had bagged tickets for both nights.

Robbie Graham’s ticket was bought for him by his dad Gordon as a 21st birthday present. The pair made the journey to Cardiff from their hometown in Hertfordshire.

Others had less far to travel to see the gig.

Chris Smith, 60, from Porthcawl said: “I’ve been a fan of their music for years and years but I’d never been to see them.

“I also went to see Adele in Wembley about two weeks ago now. The roof was open there and the sound was amazing.”

40-year-old Lee Jackson and his wife Nicola, 35, from Risca, bought tickets as a Christmas present for their 15-year-old daughter Danielle.

Danielle said: “My mum texted me to tell me they bought tickets in the middle of a maths lesson. Not many of my friends like them because it’s for old people isn’t it? But now they all want to go.”
