A MULTI-MILLION-pound hospice offering care to terminally ill patients has officially opened.

St David’s Hospice Care, in Newport, will offer inpatient palliative care for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, such as end-stage heart failure and motor neurone disease.

Health Secretary Vaughan Gething unveiled a plaque to officially open the new £5m, 15-bed facility yesterday.

Mr Gething said: “The investment from the Welsh Government has enabled the hospice team to deliver patient and family-led services in a new, state-of-the-art facility.

“The team at St David’s Hospice Care has developed a palliative care model which is universally recognised as an example of first-class care.

“Now the new building is open the charity will be able to support more people who need their help at the end of their lives.”

The hospice, in Malpas, replaces the 10-bed St Anne’s hospice unit.

Emma Saysell, chief executive of St David’s Hospice Care, said: “The opening of our fabulous new hospice is a landmark day for hospice care in Wales. It marks the opening of what is the first purpose-built, independent voluntary-sector inpatient hospice in Wales this century.

“Our care depends on support from our community and we hope they will continue to support us.”
