Thousands pound roads at Swansea 10k run

-

THEY came in all shapes and sizes.

Young, old, fit and well, maybe, not quite as fit as they once were.

But more than 4,000 runners took centre stage in Swansea yesterday for the city’s annual 10k run.

The event along the seafront promenade from St Helen’s to Mumbles and back also saw huge crowds despite poor weather.

Bosses estimated total numbers at around the 8,000 mark.

Electronic time-recording meant that competitors could find out quickly and easily whether their efforts were a

personal best on a running-friendly course with some of the finest views anywhere in the country.

As well as the 10k, there were also 1k, 3k and 5k junior fun runs, along with a 10k wheelchair race, and the famous and highly-competitive Mascot 100-metre dash, won this year by St John’s Ambulance’s mascot, Bertie the Badger, who picked up £100 for their designated charity.

The event first kicked off in 1981 and has grown annually ecver since.

Competitor Huw Davies from Treboeth said it was his 10th attempt to break his personal 60-minute barrier.

“And I finally did it in two minutes under,” he added.

“Better than that, I have raised the best part of £300 for two different charities. It’s a brilliant 10k and very much part of Swansea!”
