High-profile academic joins board of Glas Cymru

-

GLAS Cymru, which owns Welsh Water, has confirmed Professor Tom Crick is to join its board as a nonexecutive director, succeeding Professor Stephen Palmer, who is retiring at the end of the year.

Prof Crick, a professor of computer science and public policy at Cardiff Metropolitan University, will join the board from October 1, 2017.

He has said he is “delighted” to be joining the board and looking at the long-term future of the company.

Prof Crick, 36, has previously advised the Office of the Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales and is currently an expert adviser to the Welsh Government and chair of the recently-announced National Network for Excellence in Science & Technology, a £4m investment by the Welsh Government.

Prof Crick is a graduate and PhD alumnus of the University of Bath, and has served in a number of highprofile advisory positions in Wales and across the UK.

He was appointed an MBE in June in the Queen’s 2017 Birthday Honours list, for services to computer science and the promotion of computer science education.

He chaired the Welsh Government’s review of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) curriculum in 2013, as well as chairing the development of a new Digital Competence Framework for all schools in 2016, as part of the Curriculum for Wales reforms.

Prof Crick will formally stand for election as a director at Glas Cymru’s next Annual General Meeting in July 2018.
