Tributes to much-loved Welsh radio presenter

WELSH radio presenter Alan Thompson has died after a short illness, it was announced yesterday.

BBC Radio Wales said: “We’re sad to announce that our colleague and friend Alan Thompson has died. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and many friends today.”

Colin Paterson, editor of BBC Radio Wales, added: “Alan’s passion and love for music shone through in everything he did. A champion of the Welsh music scene, an entertaine­r and innovative broadcaste­r, Alan was loved by listeners as well as colleagues.”

His popular radio show saw him present classic songs and explore the stories behind them with special guests.

Tributes have been pouring in for the much-loved presenter.

Comedian Rob Brydon said that he was “heartbroke­n”.

He said in a tweet: “I am heartbroke­n by the news that my old Radio Wales friend and colleague Alan Thompson has died. We shared so many laughs together. He has left us far, far too soon, so much left to do and enjoy. I send my deepest condolence­s to his family and all that loved him.”

Singer-songwriter Amy Wadge said: “Totally heartbroke­n to hear of the passing of Alan Thompson. Not only was he a great mate but he helped me so so much in the early days of my career.

“I will never forget how much you did for me, mate, and to say that you will be missed is an understate­ment, hope you know how much you were loved.”

A moving tribute from his band Peppermint Parlour said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the news that Alan Thompson, founder member, guitarist, singer & songwriter extraordin­aire has died this afternoon 28th September 2017 after a short battle with illness.

“Please, Pep Fans, say a prayer for Thommo & his family. Spare a thought for them at the passing of our leader.”
