Mountain-snow parking warning

-

POLICE have issued a warning to motorists who may be thinking of heading to the Brecon Beacons to enjoy the predicted snow this week.

It comes as a snow and ice warning for Wales today and tomorrow has been expanded by forecasters.

A severe warning that was issued on Tuesday has since been extended after a spokesman for the Met Office said “the impact has increased”.

The warning is in place from 12.05am today until 6pm tomorrow, while it says there will be “increasingly frequent snow showers” with between 2cm and 5cm likely “fairly widely”.

Dyfed-Powys Police has warned drivers after parking chaos last year when motorists wanted to make the most of the snow in a picturesque part of Wales.

Families who flooded the Brecon Beacons on a Saturday afternoon in January 2016 to make the most of the crisp winter weather and a couple of inches of snow returned to their cars to find an unwelcome surprise.

More than 100 drivers who parked on the A470 at Storey Arms were hit with parking fines by police.

Police said at the time that the volume of cars parked while people went sledging was causing big problems in the area.

Police are keen to avoid a repeat this year and will be patrolling the Storey Arms area this weekend.

Sergeant Owen Dillon, of Brecon roads policing unit, said: “I would urge anyone planning on visiting to consider parking at other locations.”
