Weather warning as torrential rain is forecast

-

A YELLOW weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of Wales over the weekend.

The Met Office said heavy rain is expected across much of south-east Wales from this evening through to tomorrow morning.

Up to 4cm of rain is predicted to fall within just three hours tomorrow morning.

The weather warning is in place from 6pm today through to 9am on New Year’s Day.

The Met Office said bus and train services could be affected due to the adverse weather.

The forecasters said that journey times will be made longer due to spray and flooding on some roads.

The flooding of some homes and businesses is also possible but Natural Resources Wales said the flooding risk today is “very low”.

They have issued a “low” risk status for tomorrow in Cardiff, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff and the Vale of Glamorgan, which means that flooding is possible, and advise residents to be aware.

The chief forecaster said: “An area of rain will run across southern parts of England and Wales on Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday. With the ground very wet in these areas this is likely to lead to rising water levels and some flooding in places. This is most likely on Sunday morning with some very heavy rain possible for a time.

“15-25mm of rain is likely with some spots seeing 30-40mm – much of this falling in three hours or so on Sunday morning.”

Today across Wales the forecast is set to be cloudy and mild with rain at times throughout the morning.

It is likely to turn drier and brighter later, but will turn increasingly breezy throughout the day.

A maximum temperature of 12°C is forecast.
