Demolition could start at Brains brewery site
WORK to transform the Brains brewery site in Cardiff could start next month.
Under ambitious plans, the city centre site would see new office, leisure and residential space built alongside the River Taff.
Brains would relocate to another site at Courtney House at Pacific Business Park in Cardiff Bay, but the listed brewing building and iconic Brains chimney would remain.
The new development would be known as Central Quay.
To make room for the new plans, a series of buildings would need to be demolished.
The buildings to be demolished do not have any special architectural or historical merit, according to agent Lichfields. They are the gatehouse, engineering building, offices, the grain silo, Crawshay Arms pub and fermentation tanks.
The new development would include a 200-bedroom hotel, a 650space multi-storey car park and a dedicated food hall.
An application for the existing buildings on the site to be demolished has been submitted which says work is expected to begin on February 9.
The demolition of the pub and large fermentation tanks would not take place until bat surveys have been carried out. They are due to take place from mid-April.
The application has been submitted by developer Rightacres to Cardiff council which is yet to issue final approval.
