Emotional Sanches is not an issue
CARLOS Carvalhal has defended Renato Sanches’ reaction to his injury at Wolves last weekend, and has no issues with the Swansea City midfielder showing his emotions.
Sanches, 20, has had a difficult season on loan from Bayern Munich, struggling for fitness and form during his time in South Wales. However, he had shown some encouraging signs following Carvalhal’s appointment, impressing in the second half of the games against Watford and Tottenham.
But he had a tough FA Cup outing at Wolves, with his frustrations being evident as he got into some angry exchanges with team-mates before feeling a hamstring problem. When Sanches left the field he walked away from the Swansea physios who had come onto the pitch to treat him, kicking the dug-out in frustration before striding down the tunnel alone.
Carvalhal has made a notable effort to engage with his Portuguese compatriot, and has spoken of having a specific role in mind for the former Benfica player.
But the Swans boss says he understands the frustrations of the midfielder. “I did not know about that,” he said. “But it is something I understand and I think this emotion in this situation is normal.
“If he did do that it is because of frustration. He was very upset about the situation.
“It is absolutely normal if you are frustrated about something.
“If has a reaction it is because he is upset about the injury and because he wants to play. I would be very upset, for example, if I go to a game and cannot talk and do the things I like to do.”
Sanches is a doubt for the clash with Newcastle as a result.
