We’ll need a great run to reach seventh heaven, says Flynn

-

NEWPORT County need to go on a run if they are to break into the top seven in League Two, according to manager Mike Flynn.

The Exiles are currently eight points behind seventh-placed Exeter City with 13 games left to play and 39 points still to play for.

Their league form has slipped recently with away defeats to Lincoln City, Colchester United and Mansfield Town but they managed to stop VALE PARK PORT VALE v NEWPORT 3pm the rot on Saturday with a goalless draw with promotion hopefuls Notts County at Rodney Parade.

And Flynn is eager for his side to get back to winning ways today against Port Vale as he targets a late run to the play-offs.

“I thought it was a very good determined display [against Notts County],” said Flynn. “It wasn’t a great spectacle but it was about stopping the rot and getting back to being tough to beat.

“For me the most important thing was the clean sheet.

“It would’ve been great to have won, we all want to win football matches, but we haven’t had a clean sheet in a while so it was good to show that the boys can still do it.

“In this league anybody can beat anybody, it’s about who is the most consistent on the day.

“If we want to break into the top seven we’ve got to go on a run.

“We’ve got to get points on the board because we’ve got catching up to do. You’ve seen what Crawley have done, they’ve done very well.

“There is always going to be somebody who comes late, I’ve said this all season. Hopefully, it can be us but I’m taking it game by game.”

After making a few changes to the team against the Magpies, Flynn will have to make at least one more with skipper Joss Labadie now suspended for two games after picking up his 10th booking of the season.

“It’s a big blow but it gives somebody else a chance to step up and stake a claim,” Flynn added.

“We haven’t got a like for like but it gives somebody with a different style the chance to come in.”
