Improving prospects for Welsh patients’ prostate treatment

-

DESPITE alarming figures just released, the prospects for men with prostate cancer are actually better than ever, with men diagnosed today being two-and-a-half times more likely to live for 10 years or more than if they were diagnosed in 1990.

Yet due mainly to an increasing and ageing population, the number of men dying from the disease is growing. It is even more important to be aware of the symptoms and the treatment options.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Welshmen and third-biggest cancer killer in the United Kingdom.

Figures released by Prostate UK last month reveal that 11,819 men now die from prostate cancer every year in the UK, compared to 11,442 women who die from breast cancer, and the breast cancer figure is decreasing.

It means that across the UK, the male-only disease is now the third most common cancer to die from, after lung and bowel cancer.

Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals provide first-class private healthcare to the immediate local areas of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, as well as across south Wales and surrounding regions.

Consultant urological surgeon Mr Andrew Thomas has unrivalled expertise in green light laser surgery for benign prostate disease and for performing prostate biopsies in patients with difficult-to-diagnose prostate cancer.

There is now a team of seven consultant urologists at Nuffield Health locally.

Prostate cancer in its early stages is commonly curable, but often causes only mild or no symptoms.

On Thursday evening, March 22, Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals is holding a free event called “Let’s talk prostate symptoms and treatment options”.

Consultant urologist Mr Andrew Thomas will give a presentation at the Vale hospital and then offer complimentary one-to-one mini advice sessions to individual men on the same evening.

If you’d like, you can bring a friend or family member with you to the sessions, but places are limited, so please book online at www.nuffieldhealth.com/hospitals/cardiff-and-vale or ring 0333 305 3467.
