Jealous dad jailed for assault on ex-partner that broke her finger

-

A “JEALOUS” and “insecure” man twisted and broke his ex-girlfriend’s finger by assaulting her when he wrongly became convinced she had been seeing someone else.

Father-of-two Jonathan Cole, who had a previous conviction for domestic violence, left his former partner unable to do her job as a beautician for three months due to her injury.

Sentencing him at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Thomas Crowther QC said: “It is the usual insecure jealousy we see from men who beat their wives and partners.”

The assault occurred in the early hours of August 27 last year at the home of Joanne Morris, 33.

Prosecutor Paul Hewitt said: “It seems the defendant became concerned perhaps Ms Morris was seeing someone else.”

The court heard the couple’s short relationship ended about a week before the incident.

Prosecutors said the defendant went to Ms Morris’ house and there was an argument.

Mr Hewitt told the court: “He grabbed her by the hand and broke her finger. It was quite a severe injury.”

A neighbour reported hearing a woman’s loud scream at around 2am.

Cole, 36, from Byrd Crescent in Penarth, initially denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm but changed his plea on the morning his trial was due to start.

Cole was jailed for 18 months and a restraining order was imposed.
