Sir Terry Matthews offers work experience
TWO students from Swansea University have won an eight-week placement in Canada working alongside Welsh entrepreneur Sir Terry Matthews.
James Andrews, who is studying biology, and Alex Long, a School of Management student, impressed judges at a recent Big Pitch event.
The pair were among a number of students taking part, pitching either themselves or their entrepreneurial ideas to a panel of judges from the business sector.
Among the judging panel were Lynne Robertson, Santander “breakthrough incubator manager”, Ann Swift, Welsh Government youth entrepreneurship manager, Chris James, Director of CIOTEK Limited and Guy Wendon, head of business development at The Alacrity Foundation.
As well as the coveted work experience with Sir Terry Matthews other prizes included four UK entrepreneurial placements and a share of a £6,000 prize pot to help get business ideas off the ground.
Big Pitch promotes entrepreneurship and to support students developing leadership, public speaking, teamwork, problem solving and creativity skills.
The event was organised by Swansea University’s enterprise team with support from Santander Universities, Big Ideas Wales and Be The Spark.
The winners of the UK placements were Joseph Newton, a sports and exercise student, Davey Morgan, who studies history, and School of Management students, Canisha Chakadya, Brett Lewis and Reece Somaiya.
The £6,000 funding was awarded to Joe Charman (Pilot Plus), Sam Lewis (Air Quality Management), Louis Broomfield, who is creating a sport sponsorship platform, James Elphick and his mobile barbering app, BlockChop, and Emily Leek, who is retailing cruelty-free makeup.
