Tribute as boxing stalwart Glyn Davies dies
A WELSH bantamweight boxing champion who went on to manage and train future champions has died aged 75.
Tributes have been paid to Glyn Davies, from Llanelli, who devoted most of his life to boxing, both inside and outside the ring.
Mr Davies, pictured, decided to focus on the sport professionally after being overlooked for the Commonwealth Games shortly after he achieved a Welsh ABA title as a young amateur boxer.
During his career in the ring, Glyn “Bach” Davies had 67 bouts after making his debut in
1962.
Mr Davies celebrated winning the Welsh bantamweight title in October 1979, when he was 36, after twice being unsuccessful.
One person paying tribute to Mr Davies is former Llanelli Star sports editor Barrie Thomas, who said: “Having covered part of his career in the ring and involvement in boxing outside it, his dedication to the sport was unquestionable.
“He preferred to be known as the Peter Pan of the ring and lived up to that reputation in winning the Welsh bantamweight at the age of 36.
“His crowd pleasing style also made him in demand with promoters.
“His contribution to sport in the town has guaranteed he will be remembered among Llanelli’s well-known boxing personalities.”
