Barclay misses final after surgery

-

SCARLETS star John Barclay has had an operation to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon after being injured during their Guinness PRO14 semi-final demolition of Glasgow Warriors.

The hugely popular flanker and Scotland captain went down in the seventh minute with a searing pain in his left leg and had to be helped off.

And he will miss Saturday’s final with Leinster at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium.

It means Barclay, who will join Edinburgh this summer after five years in Wales, has played his last game for the Scarlets.

The 31-year-old had surgery yesterday.

No time-frame has been put on his recovery period, but he could be a doubt for Scotland’s autumn Tests, which include a clash with Wales.

It had previously been announced he was among several senior Scotland players rested for next month’s tour of Canada, United States and Argentina.

“Together with the Scottish Rugby Union and Edinburgh Rugby, we have made arrangements for John to begin his recovery and rehabilitation in Edinburgh,” said a Scarlets’ spokesperson.

Scotland face Wales in Cardiff on November 3, followed by Murrayfield appointments with Fiji, South Africa and Argentina.

Barclay has won 71 caps and was an influential performer when Scotland claimed victories over Australia and England earlier this season.

They finished third in the Six Nations with Grand Slam kings Ireland and Wales, who were runners-up, being the only countries to beat them.

He has been a consistent performer for the Scarlets, rivalling Simon Easterby, David Lyons, Regan King and Tadhg Beirne as their best import.
