Wales gets set for a second sunny bank holiday weekend

- PHILIP DEWEY Reporter philip.dewey@walesonline.co.uk » Big Weekend: WoW pullout

IT looks to be a second sunny Bank Holiday weekend with warm and pleasant weather expected in Wales. While there has been a dip in the sunny weather mid week, it’s likely to come back in time for the long weekend – but it could be disrupted by thunderstorms that are lurking close to the UK

High pressure is set to continue to dominate with heat building into the late May Bank Holiday weekend, and temperatures getting to 5C to 8C above average.

In Cardiff, temperatures are expected to reach as high as 23C during the weekend although there is a chance of light rain and showers.

In Caerphilly temperatures could reach even higher at 24C with light showers also expected amongst the sunshine.

It’s also promising to be a beautiful day in Swansea, with the city playing host to Radio One’s Big Weekend with acts such as Ed Sheeran performing.

Other acts on the Radio 1 weekender’s star-studded bill include Sam Smith who’s slated to headline the Saturday night, while Florence & The Machine will follow Taylor Swift will bring things to a close on Sunday.

It’s going to be even warmer in Wrexham with temperatures set to 24C and no sign of rain while in Bangor it’s set to be a little cooler.

With the Hay Festival taking place next week, while the weather forecast for Hay-on-Wye is predicting warm weather, it’s expected to be mainly cloudy with the odd sunny spell.

Hollywood star Rose McGowan, one of the first actresses to publicly speak out against disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, is among those appearing.

Other authors listed on the bill include War Horse’s Sir Michael Morpurgo, Atonement author Ian McEwan, Jilly Cooper, Marian Keyes and The Handmaid’s Tale author Margaret Atwood.

A spokesperson from the Met Office said: “On Friday, it will be mainly cloudy with outbreaks of heavy rain through the morning. The rain will ease later, with a few brighter spells developing in the southeast later in the day.

“It’s likely to be very warm on Saturday with plenty of sunshine, but with the chance of an isolated heavy shower or thunderstorm. It will stay very warm on Sunday and Monday, with the chance of scattered thunderstorms.”

In his assessment of the weather, Welsh Channel 4 weather forecast Liam Dutton said pressure will have a big part to play.

He said: “This week’s weather will largely be influenced by high pressure.

“However, low pressure will be loitering just south of the UK.

“At times, it’ll drift close enough to increase the risk of showers and thunderstorms for England and Wales.

“Whilst confidence is high that there’ll be some showers and thunderstorms, the detail of exactly where and when is uncertain.

“Next weekend, it looks like warmth and sunshine will continue, but still with a risk of showers and thunderstorms.”

As for the half term holiday next week the Met Office long range weather forecast is predicting that it will remain “overall drier and warmer than average”.
