CHANNEL 4 are set to bring in an A-list of big-hitters for their first coverage of Welsh international rugby in America and Argentina this summer.

The station was announced earlier this month as the broadcasters of Wales’ three-Test tour in June, after securing a four-year deal to screen nine live European Champions Cup matches each season from 2018/19.

It’s believed the BBC and online broadcaster Amazon were also interested in screening Wales’ opening Test against the Springboks, in Washington, and the two internationals with the Pumas in San Juan and Santa Fe.

Channel 4’s main sports coverage is now largely focused on Formula One and other motor sport, having previously covered horse racing.

And to mark the occasion the station is believed to have pulled off a significant coup and signed up some of the biggest names in Welsh rugby for the opening Test with the Springboks.

Though they are close to finalising their team, it is understood one key individual is yet to be wrapped up.

British and Irish Lions skipper Sam Warburton, Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, hooker Ken Owens and centre Jonathan Davies are all thought to be giving their insights on the tour.

Former England winger and now accomplished broadcaster Ugo Monye is set to be involved, along with ex-Wales skipper Ryan Jones and Springbok full-back Thinus Delport.

With the match in Washington kicking off at 10pm (BST), the channel will begin broadcasting at 9.20pm with their lead presenter being Lee McKenzie, better known for her coverage of motorsport.

It is currently unclear as to who will be the lead commentator of the live action.

WRU group chief executive Martyn Phillips said of Channel 4 getting the TV rights: “We are delighted to be partnering with Channel 4 to deliver live rights to all three of this summer’s Tests.

“The squad will be travelling across the Americas facing Rugby Championship opposition and it is great that the matches will be shown live on free-to-air TV on Saturday evenings in the UK.

“Channel 4 have a strong sporting pedigree with an innovative reputation and have recently announced a long-term deal to show the Champions Cup and we are looking forward to working with them.”

Channel 4’s sports editor Stephen Lyle said: “We’re really excited to be bringing rugby to Channel 4 viewers for the first time and the fact it’s Wales taking on teams of the calibre of South Africa and Argentina makes it even more special.”
