Swansea Uni up to be Wales’ best
SWANSEA University has outshone universities in the Welsh capital by again hitting its highest rank in a UK league table and becoming the top-ranking institution in Wales.
The university has climbed 14 places to 31st out of 121 institutions in the Guardian University Guide 2019, making it Wales’ best.
Quality of teaching, student satisfaction and employability earned Swansea top marks in the league table of the best universities, released today.
But Cardiff was fourth in Wales and left lagging in joint 58th place with Brunel, Soas University of London, King’s College London and Kingston University, compared to 42nd last year.
A Cardiff University spokeswoman said they were determined to become the best worldwide and said they were pleased to rank within the top 10 of a series of subjects, ranging from journalism, to dentistry, geography and pharmacology.
She said: “The result is disappointing, especially as we aspire to be amongst the very best in the UK and the world.
“Despite the overall result it’s reassuring that we are ranked in the top 10 in subject areas including journalism, publishing and public relations (3rd), media and film (7th), dentistry (10th), pharmacy and pharmacology (6th) and geography and environmental studies (9th).
“Whilst this is an important measure it’s not the only guide. For example, the university secured a place in the top 100 universities in the world and top 10 in the UK in the Shanghai Rankings.”
