Spectacular! Hundreds of jellyfish surge into marina

-

HUNDREDS of jellyfish have been spotted floating in Swansea Marina.

Melinda Greenacre made the discovery last night after enjoying a meal with her family at the Beefeater.

When she went outside and looked into the waters, the 43-yearold, of Clydach, could not believe her eyes.

Seemingly hundreds of the creatures were floating in clear sight, something she and her family found fascinating.

She said: “We went for a family meal, and when we left I looked into the marina and they were everywhere you looked.

“There were hundreds of them. “It was really unusual, I’ve never seen that many before.”

Swansea Marina isn’t the only place where the creatures have been spotted this week.

Mark Turner visited Rhossili Beach with his partner, Vanessa Kidd, on Monday afternoon.

They spotted five or six of the barrel jellyfish washed up at the far western end of the beach. “When we arrived there and the tide had just turned and started to come in, they all looked fairly fresh,” he said. “We had gone down there to swim. “I have seen articles and photos about these jellyfish before so wasn’t overly surprised to find them but it was certainly an amazing sight with the size and beauty of them.”

It’s not the first time Rhossili Bay has had creatures washing up on its shores.

In May we reported that a strange decomposed creature with a long tail and a large head had washed up, later identified as a porpoise. Dogfish and dead sharks have also been spotted on other occasions.

Gill Bell, head of Conservation Wales at the Marine Conservation Society, said: “One possible cause is the weather this year, which has been ferocious at times, causing deep disturbances and strong currents.

“It is important that dead marine animals are reported so that we can understand more about where they were found and their cause of death.”
