SEVEN Welshmen are just 36 holes away from playing at the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie after working their way through Regional Qualifying.

Owen Edwards (Kendleshire) and Delon Hau both prevailed in a seven-way play-off for six Final Qualifying places at Minchinhampton.

And there was good news for Wentworth’s Gaelen Trew as he finished in a three-way tie for first at Burhill.

Trew, along with Sweden’s

Henrik Sohlberg and

Louis Hirst

(Banstead

Downs), shot 65, seven-under par, to book his place in the next round of qualifying.

Current

Welsh Amateur champion Jack Davidson (Llanwern) (pictured) will also be involved on Tuesday as he posted a two-under 68 at Panmure to finish tied for second. IN ASSOCIATION WITH

David Boote (Walton Heath) and Gareth Blease took two of the 14 places available at Wildernesse while Lee Rooke (Royal St David’s) advanced from Fairhaven.

Those who were successful in qualifying will now play 36 holes at one of the four Final Qualifying venues on Tuesday with a place at The Open at stake.

They will be joined by golfers exempt from Regional Qualifying.

Stuart Manley and Rhys Enoch (Truro) will tackle the Notts (Hollinwell) course along with Blease, Trew and Boote.

Hau will compete at Prince’s while Edwards, Rooke, Davidson, Garry Houston and Jamie Donaldson will be at St Annes Old Links.

The other course is The Renaissance Club.

Each venue will have three places at The Open up for grabs.
