CITY GRIDLOCK AS ROAD CLOSED
DRIVERS faced gridlock in Swansea city centre yesterday as a major road was closed ahead of the Wales Airshow this weekend.
Swansea Council advertised in advance the closure of Oystermouth Road from its junction with West Way through to Mumbles Road at the junction with Sketty Lane from 10am yesterday. Diversions were in place, but the closure still caused large-scale traffic congestion.
There were reports of gridlock on many roads around the city centre as the large volume of traffic which would normally go down Oystermouth Road tried to navigate alternative routes.
There was a brief reprieve for rushhour last night but the road was closed again at 7pm and will remain shut until 6am on Monday.
People took to Twitter to express their frustration. Nick Hyden wrote: “Heads literally gone! Roads in Swansea shut on the day we move house.”
Lee Collins said: “Well done to @ SwanseaCouncil for causing carnage on the roads by closing one major routes in and around Swansea next coming days great work.”
A spokesman for Swansea Council said: “We are keeping the situation under close and constant review. We’d like to apologise to motorists for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience.”
