Glam’s T20 bid hit by injury blow

-

GLAMORGAN have been hit by a double injury blow with Australia batsman Shaun Marsh ruled out of the season and paceman Marchant de Lange to miss the rest of the Vitality Blast campaign, writes Dominic Booth.

Marsh suffered ligament damage on his shoulder during the Welsh county’s T20 defeat to Sussex Sharks on Sunday.

De Lange has not featured since May 23 when he was struck by an ankle ligament injury damage during a narrow loss to Middlesex.

The South African has since suffered a recurrence of the injury during a running session and Glamorgan will miss his searing pace in the Blast compettion.

Marsh’s absence means Usman Khawaja will be the sole overseas player in the Vitality Blast while Glamorgan won’t have an overseas star at all for their remaining County Championship games – as things stand.

The county are exploring signing another overseas player to stand-in for Marsh.

The injuries will mean two homegrown Welsh talents will be handed opportunities in the shortest format, win which the county have won one and lost one so far.

Cardiff-born batsman Kiran Carlson is in line to replace Marsh while Lukas Carey’s pace bowling will be utilised instead of de Lange.

“Losing Marchant for the rest of the competition and in Shaun’s case, the season, is a big blow,” said Glamorgan director of cricket Hugh Morris.

“Marchant was one of our best bowlers in the T20 competition last year.”
