As soon as Wayne’s new role was revealed’
amount of success in the last couple of years playing a good brand of rugby and Wayne being given this opportunity is a reflection of the whole environment as well as what Wayne himself has contributed.
“Hopefully, it will be an attractive prospect for somebody and maybe somebody out there with ambitions to coach internationally will be looking at us and thinking coming to coach the Scarlets may not be a bad move.
“We are excited, we are pleased for Wayne, but we are excited for the future.”
Pivac has long been considered one of the leading candidates on the WRU’s shortlist once Gatland revealed he wouldn’t be carrying on after the World Cup.
Fellow Kiwi Dave Rennie, Glasgow’s current head coach, was understood to also be in the frame, as was compatriots Chris Boyd - who has since been appointed at Northampton and Scott Robertson, who is in the hot seat at the Crusaders Super Rugby franchise.
“From our point of view, the communication during the process has been excellent, we have known from Wayne and the WRU what is happening at every stage,” explained Daniels.
“In terms of process, we have put some contingency plans in place, but, of course, you don’t go the whole hog until you know for certain.
“We have a year before Wayne leaves and that allows us to go to the next step in our process and really be clear on what we want from the next head coach of the Scarlets.
“We have time to meet people, whether that is internally, in Wales or internationally.
“When we have changed coaches previously, we have had a very small window to do anything about it. We have time now.
“One of the key principles in my role is to provide continuity even through periods of change.” So will Pivac be involved in the appointment of the new coach?
“Obviously, we will sound Wayne out on potential candidates and we would have the same communication with Wayne as we would with any national coach when we are looking to appoint,” added Daniels.
