British duo set for speedway showdown in Cardiff

-

IT’S every Brit for himself as home heroes Tai Woffinden and Robert Lambert do battle in Adrian Flux British Speedway Grand Prix heat five in Cardiff tonight.

The draw has pitched double world champion Woffinden and British champion Lambert side-by-side in blue and white respectively.

To add spice to what should be an epic showdown, 2013 Cardiff winner Emil Sayfutdinov – currently third in the World Championship – starts in red.

And 2003 British SGP winner Nicki Pedersen completes a star-studded line-up in yellow, coming to the tapes directly alongside Lambert, who idolised the Dane as a youngster.

Woffinden has a tough start to his night when he defends his 11-point World Championship lead against nearest rival Freddie Lindgren in race one. They are joined by Przemyslaw Pawlicki and former Cardiff finalist Matej Zagar.

He has a stiff test in heat 13 sees him tackle four-time world champion Greg Hancock, Maciej Janowski and GB star Craig Cook.

Cook starts his first British SGP as a World Championship regular by facing world No.2 Patryk Dudek, Sayfutdinov and Bartosz Zmarzlik in heat four. And he is hoping his latest third place in Sweden could mark a turning point to his season as he heads to Cardiff.

He said: “Maybe we have just been stuck in a rut and doing what we would normally do. Obviously that hasn’t been working, but it looks like we have found something.”

The event, now in its 18th year, begins at the Principality Stadium at 5pm, with gates opening at 3.30pm.

Tickets will be available for purchase from the WRU Store (near gate 3) at Principality Stadium from 9am to 5.30pm today, while there is a fanzone on City Hall Lawn from 11am.
