Boss’ part in another fine winning start

-

GRAHAM Potter can make a little bit of Swansea City history against Birmingham City tonight, but he can also take a bit of unwanted credit for the last time the Welsh club kicked off a league campaign with three wins.

The 43-year-old has steered the Swans to victories over Sheffield United and Preston North End for a 100% start to their Championship campaign.

Victory over the Blues and former boss Garry Monk could even take them top of the embryonic table, although their rivals will all play over the remainder of the weekend.

The last Swansea manager to steer the club to a perfect record from the first three league games was Brian Flynn, who achieved the feat at the start of the 2003-04 season.

Those victories came against Bury, Cheltenham and Boston, the latter coming on a Friday night in front of The Vetch.

And that is where Potter had his involvement, playing the full 90 minutes for Boston in a 3-0 defeat as Lee Trundle, Kevin Nugent and Andy Robinson all found the net for the hosts.

It would probably not be a night that Potter would particularly want reminding of, but there was little chance to escape it when a compilation of some of Trundle’s best moments was shared on social media, including a clip of him turning Potter inside and out in that Boston game.

Potter was asked about the clip at his pre-match press conference.

“I think it was me, I probably remember that moment and I think that was one where I thought it was time to retire,” joked the former fullback.

“It was not nice coming down here and knowing you would play someone like that and Lee Trundle did that to better players than me.

“It was not pleasant. It was such a long drive down on the bus, be it from places like York or from Boston. “No wonder he did me on that clip! “But you also remember that people like Leon Britton were in that side, it was where things were just starting to kick off down here.

“There was a buzz around the place, it was a Friday night and Trundle was such a handful at that level. I can tell you, so it’s not the most pleasant memory.”
