Ricketts keeping feet on the ground

-

WREXHAM sit top of the National League heading into this afternoon’s clash at Eastleigh – but boss Sam Ricketts says they won’t be getting carried away.

The Dragons returned to the summit after Tuesday night’s 2-0 win at Maidenhead United which made it 10 points from a possible 12 so far under Ricketts.

Mike Fondop netted his third goal in four matches while a stunning effort from the outstanding Jordan Maguire-Drew secured all three points at York Road.

They lead the way on goal difference from Gateshead and Sutton United while are now the only side in the entire division who are yet to concede a goal.

It is Wrexham’s joint-best equal start to the season in the fifth tier of English football, matching the one they made under Andy Morrell back in 2011/12.

Meanwhile a fourth clean sheet on the spin in the opening four matches is something no Wrexham side has ever done before.

“It is nice but it means nothing, we are still only in August,” said Ricketts after his side went top.

“August is important but we have got a long way to go, if you tell me we are top of the league in April I’ll be a little more interested.

“Yes we’ve started well but there are things we need to work on and need to get better at.

“We are doing really well and winning games, but the continual strive to improve has to never ever end.”

Today’s opponents Eastleigh have had a mixed start to the new season, winning two and losing two of their four matches.

Ricketts had his selection options further boosted by the return to action of last season’s leading marksman Chris Holroyd and Nicky Deverdics off the bench in the second half at Maidenhead.

Luke Young missed out on Tuesday with a dead leg but could feature today.
