A HOME THAT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD

-

Some say the true test of a good movie is how often it’s repeated on TV. And one film that is almost constantly being re-run on the small screen is Smokey and the Bandit.

Released in 1977, it’s every petrol head’s must-watch movie and is predictably a fume-filled action comedy.

It stars Burt Reynolds who plays a ‘bandit’ ferrying bootleg beer pursued by a ‘Smokey’ called Sheriff Buford T. Justice.

The film, which inspired two sequels, was one of several 1970s films in which Reynolds played the same thickeyebrowed, rough diamond, hard-lovin’ character.

Smokey and the Bandit’s other star was the late Jackie Gleason who plays the hapless policeman in pursuit of Reynolds and his band of hooch pedlars.

Gleason was not as redneck as his character in the film suggests. During the late 1950s the actor became interested in extra-terrestrial life and built several ‘UFO houses’ on a six-acre site in the New York City suburb of Westchester County.

Designed to look like the alien saucers he was convinced existed, they included a 50-ft diameter Mother Ship, a guest house named the Scout Ship and a round storage building and two swimming pools, all of which were completed in 1959.

The main house includes 7,450 square feet of living space with five bedrooms and six bathrooms, a library, card room, kitchen, office, dining room and an open entertainment space including a marble fireplace. It’s for sale at $12m.
