SAY HELLO TO FASHION MONTH

-

FASHION month kicked off this week with New York getting the ball rolling on a month of shows and parties.

My Instagram feed is awash with models, buyers and influencers posing up a storm on the streets of Manhattan.

The runways might be showing spring/summer 2019 collections but weather in New York has turned autumnal meaning the fashionistas are parading looks we can steal and wear now. Among the silver leather trousers and belt-bags there are loads of great ideas for transitioning your wardrobe from summer to autumn.

My current favourite hack is layering your midi dress over jeans, it works best over slim-leg, ankle-length denim, ideally with rolled or turned up hem and paired with trainers (not the ones you wear for the gym!).

Unlike in previous years when outerwear at fashion week was for the mere mortals who didn’t get shipped around in a blacked-out Mercedes Benz, coats this year are de rigueur.

Blazers were layered over everything and not just black ones. I spotted lots of grey and navy tailoring, but it was the checked versions that

ALOEWE bags don’t come cheap! This caught my eye. They look amazing over colour so I got searching and Zara has a checked blazer online now for £79.99.

The new wave of influencers has meant that fashion is more inclusive than ever. Anyone can be in the street style crowd and Millennials are choosing to follow who they feel more akin too rather than who they are told to. Ex-Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, once one of the most important figures in fashion, has a mere 100k followers on Instagram. Contrast that with Lydia Elise Millen, a marketing graduate who started blogging as a hobby and has more than 700k.

Their selfies and street style snaps have the potential to be even more diverse. Young Instagram stars are great at spotting cool new brands and shops you might have forgotten all about.

My current obsession with heritage brand Ghost is thanks to Instagrammer Monikh looking so good in their dresses and reminding me it existed.

With New York over and out, I have my notepad and pen poised to take notes on the street style at London Fashion Week.
