SWANSEA City’s Joel Asoro has revealed he rejected a move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Asoro joined the Liberty side from relegated Sunderland in a £2million move, putting pen to paper on a four-year contract in SA1.

Reports in the summer put wage demands from the player’s agent as the reason Asoro didn’t join the North London club. Spurs were said to have withdrawn from negotiations.

The 19-year-old however has reiterated it was his decision to move to Swansea, insisting game-time was important for his international prospects.

Speaking to Swedish outlet Sportbladet, Asoro said: “We sat talking to Tottenham and they said they could not promise anything about playing time.

“Then I felt I could not make that choice. It does not hurt to have higher pay, but I thought more about playing.

“If I want to compete seriously while playing with the U21 national team, I need to play in my club team as well.”

The tricky winger has made three appearances for the Swans this season.

He is yet to register a goal, but has one assist to his name. He says he is enjoying life under manager Graham Potter.

“I have started in three out of five matches and I have an assist,” he said.

“The move feels very positive. I am glad to have a Swedish coach [Graham Potter], which makes things easier.”

Asoro is currently on international duty with Sweden Under-21s, having played 77 minutes on Friday evening in their 1-0 win over Hungary. Sweden play their second game of the international break against Turkey later on Monday.
