I felt empowered by your article
FOR someone who is mostly of Welsh heritage and who identifies as a stammerer, I felt empowered reading the article “The difficulty of saying your own name: the shame and bullying of living with a stammer in Wales”. It made me feel good to see that stammering is receiving so much attention in Wales, especially in Cardiff which was the home to one of my grandparents.
I think that the majority of the stammerers in the world can relate to what Martin Buckridge of Cardiff stated about the shame and embarrassment that was caught up in his relationship with his parents.
In terms of the bullying, that is something that the overwhelmingly majority of young people who stammer all throughout the world have to deal with at some point in their lives.
It made me think back a few years to when the Stuttering Foundation, a non-profit charity, published a book entitled Trouble At Recess, for the purpose of instructing kids on how to handle bullying and teasing.
The fact that such a book had to be published in the first place shows that bullying is prevalent for kids who stammering, but also the first printing book sold out in record time which underscores that there was a great need for the book.
The website of the Stuttering Foundation (www.stammeringhelp. org) also offers more resources for young people who stammer on bullying, as well as many free resources for stammerers of all ages. Laura Palmer Houston, Texas, USA
