We can’t rest on our laurels, says skipper Pearson

-

SKIPPER Shaun Pearson wants to push on with Wrexham having enjoyed their best-ever start to a National League campaign.

Inspirational centre-half Pearson was the Dragons’ match-winner in the 1-0 success at Braintree last Saturday which moved them on to 21 points from the first 10 games.

That total surpasses their previous best 10-game points tally of 20 back in the 2011/12 season

It was also a third clean sheet in a row for the Dragons and seven in 10 for the division’s meanest defence.

Sam Ricketts’ men are second in the table and just one point behind surprise early pacesetters Harrogate Town.

Ebbsfleet United, currently 13th in the table with 14 points so far, are next up for Wrexham at the Racecourse this afternoon.

“We’re really pleased with our start,” said Pearson.

“To have 21 points puts us in a good position and we’ll look to push on now.

“It’s been a busy period and, 10 games in, you’re starting to get a gist of where teams are and have a rough idea.

“I’m not saying teams won’t move up and teams at the top end won’t drop down but you’re starting to

get a fairer comparison in terms of the league table.”

Pearson also praised the fighting spirit his side displayed to get the points at lowly Braintree.

“It was a massive three points,” he said.

“I think we learnt from losing at Solihull and got stuck in a bit more, showed a bit more fight and a bit more know-how.

“Obviously that’s important and I said after Solihull that we needed to learn and we showed good fighting spirit to come away with a win. It’s good progression for us.”

The goal for Pearson was his first of the campaign, having netted five last term, and he was certainly pleased to get off the mark.

“I should’ve had five or six!” he said.

“I’ve had the one disallowed, hit the bar, a couple off the line and missed a sitter at Eastleigh.

“I feel like I’ve got my head on the end of a lot so I was obviously delighted to get the goal and it’s funny because Jenno [James Jennings] called it as I was going up; he said he thought I was going to score.

“But I was just pleased to win to be honest and also to keep another clean sheet.

“We’re heading in the right direction.”
