Senior medic announces his plans to retire

-

DR GRAHAM Shortland, executive medical director at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, has announced his plans to retire in April 2019.

The experienced medic, who has been in his current role since 2010, has also been a consultant paediatrician for 25 years.

He was appointed as consultant paediatrician in Cardiff in 1993 and has held a wide range of clinical responsibilities, including general paediatrics, community paediatrics, paediatric intensive care, neonatology, and inherited metabolic disease.

He has also chaired a number of national roles, including the British Inherited Metabolic Disease Group and, more recently, as vice chair of the UK National Screening Committee

His career in medical leadership included roles such as clinical director for child health, which involved the commissioning of phase one of the internationally-renowned Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales.

It is anticipated that Dr Shortland will continue in his paediatric consultant role with the Children and Women’s Clinical Board to ensure a sustainable service in his paediatric clinical role.

He said: “I have greatly enjoyed all aspects and the challenges of the executive medical director role with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and NHS Wales. It has been a great privilege to be in the post for what will be nine years in June 2019.

“I would like to emphasise it will be business as usual for me during the six months’ notice period and I still consider that I have an important role to play in supporting the chief executive, executive colleagues, and the wider board in delivering on our performance and strategic plan.

“Finally I wanted to pay tribute to the fantastic NHS staff who have worked with me over the years.”
