Weekend’s all set to be wild, wet and windy

WALES is set to be battered by more heavy rain and strong winds today. The day is likely to start off bright and showery, but forecasters are warning of increasingly strong winds and heavy and persistent rain spreading from the west.

A Met Office severe weather warning for wind and rain is in place between 1pm and midnight across a large part of south Wales.

It comes just two days after torrential rain caused floods in parts of the country that were still recovering from the worst flooding in more than 30 years.

Natural Resources Wales said there are still seven flood alerts in place in the south west of the country.

The Met Office weather warning says: “A band of heavy rain is expected to move east during Friday with 15-25mm of rain falling and perhaps 50mm over higher ground.

“This will be in addition to other spells of heavy rain earlier in the week affecting a similar area. Rain will be accompanied by strong winds with gusts of 50mph possible inland and perhaps 60mph around some coasts.”

South Wales Police have urged motorists to drive safely in bad weather after a number of accidents earlier this week.

The warning came after people had a lucky escape when their car ended up submerged in a canal.

Cardiff council also cancelled all sports matches at its parks on Saturday morning because of the bad weather.

The forecast for today is for morning sunshine, with showers and increasingly strong winds likely. During the afternoon and evening, heavy and persistent rain will spread from the west and wind speeds will reach gale force. The maximum temperature will be 13 °C.

The outlook for tomorrow to Monday is for spells of sunshine but it will be breezy and there will also be showers.
