Road-ban driver caught at ‘goodwill’ crash site
A MAN arrested by police after driving an “apparently fake ambulance” was in fact working for a private medical company – and had stopped to assist at a road accident.
Officers arrested Aaron Shaun Davies after the vehicle pulled over in Victoria Road in Gowerton on the evening of November 5 following a two-vehicle accident.
When officers ran checks on the car they found the registration appeared to be too old for an inservice ambulance vehicle.
They also discovered the driver, of Parc Hendy Crescent in Penclawdd, was driving while disqualified, and without third-party insurance.
Prosecuting, Catherine Miles told Swansea Magistrates’ Court that Davies, 19, confirmed he was not employed by the NHS, and later gave a “no comment” interview during police interview.
Mitigating, Rhys Davies told the court: “Mr Davies was on his way to work, which is for a private medical company, and the vehicle is registered to the company – it is not registered to this individual.
“He saw the accident and stopped out of goodwill.”
He added that Davies had instructed his solicitor to appeal against his disqualification, but had “misunderstood the position”.
He said: “It was not a flagrant disregard of the disqualification.
“He accepts he did not check his position with his solicitor.”
Chairman of magistrates Alan Aldred sentenced Davies to a community order of 12 months, and told to undertake 100 hours of unpaid work, as well as ordered to pay £85 costs and a surcharge of £85. He was also told he would have six penalty points upon his licence once his ban had expired.
