I’ll have money to spend... how much? I’ll keep that to myself thanks – Potter

-

GRAHAM Potter has revealed he will be given cash to spend as he bids to strengthen his Swansea City squad in the January transfer window, writes Mat Davies.

The Swansea boss has regularly spoken of his desire to bolster his options if possible, although he accepts he must continue to develop the players he already has at his disposal due to the restructuring process that has taken place at the club.

But when asked if he’s been told he’ll have money to spend in the winter window, Potter responded: “Yes, but I’ll keep that to myself if you don’t mind!”

And asked if he’s held discussions with chairman Huw Jenkins over his plans for the winter window, Potter said: “Yes, we have contact all the time. The way that these things work is that you’re aware of the window so you have conversations pretty regularly, and that’s how it should be.

“Just because I say we can get more out of the group we’ve got and we can improve the players we’ve got, you’ve still got the responsibility to try and improve from externally as well, that’s normal.

“So yes, those conversations happen pretty regularly.

“When I got this job, it’s not about me, it’s about Swansea City and doing the right thing for the club. I don’t dictate that. That’s a club decision as well and I’ll do my best.

“We’ll try our best to do what we can to improve.”

Experienced duo Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer were both handed rare starts in the 3-2 win over Brentford last time out and turned in impressive performances as the Swans left Griffin Park with all three points.

It represented an impressive turnaround for the pair who had both had been linked with exits from the Liberty Stadium due to their lack of game-time so far this season.

Routledge’s contract expires at the end of the campaign while Dyer has 18 months to run on his current deal with the club.

And while Potter admits that certain members of his squad may well move on to pastures new next month, he was quick to heap praise on the experienced pair who he says have played a key role in helping to develop the youngsters at the club.

“I think you need a mix of people in your group,” he added.

“To a certain point it does boil down to, as we said in the summer, there’s a restructuring process, financially that we have to do and at the same time the player himself may say ‘I’ve only got one career, I want to play more’.

“We’ll see what can happen and of course it has to be on the club’s terms. But all of the guys that are here, they’ve done their best and I’m happy to continue with that.”

Routledge and

Dyer are both in contention to feature against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow afternoon along with

Luciano Narsingh, who is yet to play this season.
