Shock at ‘lovable’ man’s death after ‘window incident’

ACOMMUNITY has been left “shocked to its core” by the sudden death of a young man who injured himself after an incident which reportedly involved a window at a club.

Tributes have poured in for Shane James, of Ystradgynlais, Swansea, who passed away after an incident at Penrhos Social Club on December 21. It is understood the 28-year-old had sustained bleeding to his arm after the incident at the club, where his partner, Leanne Maynard, works.

The Welsh Ambulance Service and Dyfed-Powys Police later attended the scene nearby at Brecon Road following concerns for Mr James’ welfare, and he was taken to Morriston Hospital, but could not be saved.

Floral tributes have been laid, as the community has been left stunned by the loss of the former Ysgol Pen Rhos and Ysgol Maesydderwen pupil, who is described as very well thought of in the community.

These include one message from Mr James’ family, which describe him as the “love of their life”.

His aunt Julie Daniel said: “He was such a lovable and good person, everybody loved him. There was nobody in the village who had a bad word to say about him.

“He would regularly help out at the club doing anything that was needed, from decorating, cleaning up, and whatever was wanted.

“Everybody is completely devastated by what has happened.”

A fundraising campaign has been launched since Mr James’s tragic death to pay for his funeral, and has so far raised £1,720. The GoFundMe page was created by Ffion Evans, who went to school with Mr James and his three sisters, Sarah, Lisa and Andrea.

Miss Evans said: “It is such a tragedy. Shane had been out and had a brilliant night, went back to his girlfriend’s place of work and had woken up having fallen asleep and punched out at a window. He panicked and ran off. It’s so unlike him, he is not a trouble-maker at all.

“It is such a tragedy and I felt I wanted to do something to help the family out. The fundraiser has really taken off and it warms my heart to see how the community is rallying round together to help out.

“He was such a lovely boy, he had time to talk to everybody and would not hurt a fly. Everybody cannot believe what has happened, the whole community has been shocked to its core. The loss has been felt by the entire community.”

Ystradgynlais councillor Meurig Evans echoed Miss Evans’ sentiments. He said: “The community has taken it quite hard really. He worked locally in the area, and a lot of people knew him and his family.

“I can only speak highly of the boy, he was a very nice boy and it was a really tragic accident.”

A spokeswoman for Dyfed-Powys Police said: “Dyfed-Powys Police received a report concerning the welfare of a man who had left Pen Rhos Social Club with injuries shortly after 11.15pm on December 21.

“Ambulance also attended and the man was taken to hospital. Sadly, the 28-year-old man died.

“The death is not being treated a suspicious. His next of kin and HM Coroner are aware.”
