Britton sets high standards with Reds

-

LEON Britton insists he will be setting his standards high as he prepares to help Llanelli Town avoid relegation, writes Matthew Burgess.

Britton will make his second appearance for the Reds tonight when they visit league champions The New Saints, with the Stebonheath outfit five points adrift of safety.

Britton gave his new team an immediate boost on his debut last weekend as Llanelli earned a rare win at the expense of relegation rivals Llandudno.

“I’ll always put pressure on myself to be the best that I can be, to train as hard as I can, play my game as well as I can like I’ve done my whole career,” he said.

“That approach has served me well before so hopefully if I can do the same here it’ll serve me well in this period from now until the end of the season.

“I want to help push this team up the table, that is the main objective from now until the end of the season, but on a personal note I just want to get back to enjoying my football.

“I just want to enjoy the game from now until the end of the season, get the boots back on, hopefully get some wins and be able to look back on this time at the end of the season as something I really enjoyed.”

Manager Andy Hill says Britton’s presence is already having a positive influence.

“The players are just benefiting hugely from having him out there, he’s just talking to them and helping them through it,” he said.

“He picks up on what I’m asking the team to do straight away and can explain it on the pitch. It goes without saying, he’s going to be absolutely huge for us and without doubt, he’s the biggest signing in the league’s history.”

The top six clubs have already been confirmed ahead of the final round of phase one fixtures with all six matches kicking-off simultaneously at 7.30pm this evening.

Leaders Connah’s Quay (45 points) face Carmarthen Town at Richmond Park, while secondplaced Barry Town United (44) host an Aberystwyth side, desperate to end a run of defeats that shattered their top-six hopes.

Newtown entertain Cefn Druids at Latham Park, Cardiff Met go to Llandudno, while Bala against Caernarfon at Maes Tegid is the live game on S4C.
