Legendary TJ’s to become a hotel

-

AN ICONIC former music venue where rock musician Kurt Cobain allegedly proposed to Courtney Love is set to become a hotel.

The former TJs nightspot hosted bands including Oasis, Iron Maiden and the Manic Street Preachers after being rebranded in the 1980s.

And it was when Love’s band Hole played there during a UK tour that grunge icon Cobain is believed to have popped the question to her.

But the venue in Newport later closed and, following the death of its owner John Sicolo in 2010, it was sold at auction.

Councillors will decide whether to approve plans to transform it into a 58-room EasyHotel, and work could start later this year.

Developers 45 Croydon Way Ltd said: “The proposed development is an opportunity to create a vibrant active use for the currently vacant listed building, and to invest into both Clarence Place and Newport.”
