Man dies at scene of Valleys crash tragedy

POLICE have confirmed that a 43-year-old man died at the scene of a crash involving a car and a van.

Three people were also taken to hospitals in Cardiff and Merthyr following the accident in Hengoed, Ystrad Mynach.

A 30-year-old man from the Caerphilly area has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the crash and remained in police custody yesterday.

Gwent Police said the collision involved a black Seat Leon and a grey Volkswagen Crafter van on Friday evening.

Officers, along with the Welsh Ambulance Service, South Wales Fire Service and police attended the scene.

They have now confirmed that the male passenger in the Seat, a man from the Fleur-De-Lis area of Caerphilly, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Seat, and two further passengers are not believed to have serious injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen Crafter van was not injured.

The accident happened at around 8.30pm on Friday evening in New Road, Hengoed.

It was on the road heading from Tesco in Ystrad Mynach, under the viaduct and towards Pengam.

Officers are asking for any motorists using the road between 8.15pm and 8.30pm to check any dashcam footage they might have.

The Welsh Ambulance Trust said one person had been taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and two had been taken to the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil.
