Several people and organisations yesterday paid tribute to Mr Khan.

Professor Saleem Kidwai, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Wales, described Mr Khan’s death as a great tragedy.

Mr Kidwai said: “He was an enthusiastic young person and was wellliked by his peers. He was respected in the community and by his peers. He was a good student and a teacher said he was a very kind man.”

Mr Kidwai said police were investigating his death, adding community officers were working very closely with the family as all the CCTV in the area was being looked at.

Mr Abdi added: “He was always happy and smiling. He was always looking after his little brother.”

Mr Abdi said police have now been given extra funding to deal with knife crime, but he felt education was also really important.

“We need to be teaching children and young adults that carrying a knife is not a solution to your problems,” he added.

Sophie Greenaway, head of sixth form at Fitzalan High School said: “Asim was an exceptionally hard working, quiet and polite pupil.

“He was incredibly popular with both his peers and staff members during his time at Fitzalan due to his friendly, charismatic and positive personality.”

Tayyib Raza said he would miss Mr Khan, adding: “He was such a kind friend to me always had something good to say to me.

“He looked out for me multiple times and was never negative, was ‘funny as’ sometimes. But just can’t believe a childhood friend could lose their life to something stupid.”

Jenny Griffiths said: “A beautiful young man with his whole life ahead of him.

“So sorry for all his family and friends.”

Emergency services were called to St Mary Street in Cardiff at around 4.50am on Sunday.
