Tenby’s ‘magical’ Castle Beach named UK’s best

-

ONE of the most popular beaches in Wales has been named as the best in the UK.

Castle Beach in Tenby has won the battle of the beaches for 2019 – scooping the much-coveted Sunday Times Beach of the Year award.

The annual Great British Beach Guide, published by The Sunday Times for the past 11 years, judges seaside resorts across the UK.

In total, 422 beaches across Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland were inspected and eventually whittled down into a shortlist 40.

As well as Tenby’s Castle Beach coming out on top, Wales also had another seven beaches in the top 40 – Marloes Sands and Rhossili made the top 10, Barmouth was at number 12, Porth Iago at 22, Swanlake Bay at 26, Tor Bay at 36 and Mwnt at 37.

The list was compiled by travel writer Chris Haslam, who awarded the top prize to Tenby and paid tribute to the “magic” of the Pembrokeshire beach.

“It’s not just the lovely people, the superb facilities or the sheer beauty of the place,” he said.

“There’s something else – a pure and powerful seaside magic that awakens everyone’s inner child. It’s that quality that makes Castle Beach the runaway winner and the Sunday Times Beach of the Year 2019.”

Dafydd Elis-Thomas, the Welsh Government’s deputy minister for culture, sport and tourism, said: “It is excellent news for Wales – right at the start of the summer holidays...

“With many more in the top 40, this goes to show the wealth of what Wales has to offer.” Castle Beach, Tenby
