PEOPLE who link socialism and nationalis­ation together are probably unaware that the first nationalis­ed industry in Britain was ‘The Church Of England’ by Henry VIII.

In June 1914 Winston Churchill nationalis­ed British Petroleum, “Comrade Churchill” wanting the oil to be in the hands of the people, he paid £2m for a commanding majority share holding.

The BBC was nationalis­ed by the Conservati­ve Party.

Name from the past Imperial Airways was nationalis­ed by the Conservati­ve Party.

The Army and the Police,both of which are nationalis­ed, have no relationsh­ip with socialism whatsoever.

Now,we note that all these events took place before the 1917 Russian revolution.

The idea of socialism is of common ownership and that things are best done by cooperatio­n,the co-operative movement was based on that principle, municipal ownership is a form of socialism, it worked well.

From Britain’s point of view there were self inflicted side winds, maybe the Thatcher goverment’s years of ‘If it moves privatise it’’.

Post-war Germany and Japan rose as economic powerhouse­s and both had prohibited restrictio­n orders placed on them.
