Self-interested MPs stopping Brexit

-

JUST over three years ago, the largest democratic vote in British history took place, with over 30 million people indicating their choice which Parliament assured us the result of which would be binding on the future of the UK within the EU.

I was one of the 52% who voted to leave. Leave won the decision with an excess of 1.5 million votes and a 4% spread. 269 areas out of 399 voted to leave, 130 to remain.

No government and few politicians have been elected at a General Election in the last 90+ years with over 50% of the vote cast.

Cameron never wanted nor believed the UK would vote to leave and he resigned, leaving others to sort out what he promised he would implement regardless of the result.

Theresa May declared a general election and promptly conducted one of the most inept campaigns in living history, losing the majority and gaining power through a supply and confidence vote with a party that is anti Brexit.

So, after several years of Parliamentary dithering and inept negotiation, we arrived at Brexit day only to find the majority of our elected MP’s were ensuring Brexit did not happen.

This is despite all but 70 or so of those MP’s being elected on a party manifesto promise that they would carry through with Brexit.

It is not just a few Tory MPs who are preventing Brexit, but virtually all Labour, (including Welsh labour MP’s) the SNP and Lib Dems who have combined their numbers to vote down Brexit at every opportunity.

No government, not even the Blair and Thatcher so called landslide victories has achieved power with a mandate of more than 42% in the last 50 years.

That means at least 58% of the people didn’t want a majority Government.

So, why is it that all our political elite wish to stop Brexit?

Is it in the interests of democracy? Clearly not.

Is it in the interests of the country? I do not believe so.

I believe it is simple self interest and preservation that the politicians are stopping the Government carrying out what the vast majority of elected MPs promised they would deliver in their manifesto.

It seems they have forgotten that promise, their principles and the voter.

I hope whoever becomes our next PM reminds the UK that it is not

the majority of their party that is preventing Brexit... but the majority of Parliament, who were elected on what appear to be false promises.

Johnson has apparently been told he faces court proceedings for making misleading statements during the referendum.

What about calling upon every MP who promised in their Party manifesto to deliver on the Brexit vote and have deliberately prevented it by voting against it, to face the same charges? John Pidgeon Victoria Park, Cardiff
