Records may be broken as Wales swelters in sun

WALES was braced for thunderstorms last night following the hottest day of the year so far.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for most of Wales overnight and into this morning as the country basked in temperatures of about 32°C yesterday.

Fog reduced visibility along part of the M4 in the morning but it soon made way for bright sunshine.

Visitors to the 100th anniversary Royal Welsh Show tucked into icecreams and sunbathed on the showground in the scorching heat.

In Swansea, hundreds of swimmers headed to Blackpill Lido to cool off. As the summer holidays began, families took advantage of the high temperatures to take a dip in the outdoor water park.

Sam, a worker at the site’s Junction Cafe, said: “It’s chaos here. We haven’t seen it this busy this year.”

It was a similar scene at Barry Island, where the beach was crowded with sun-seekers, and Llandudno Pier, where families were seen enjoying the rides and amusement arcades.

The Met Office has said a threeday

heatwave is expected across the UK with highs of 36°C in some areas by tomorrow.

Marco Petagna, Met Office forecaster, said there is a “60% chance” tomorrow’s weather might surpass the current July record of 36.7°C (98.06°F) set at Heathrow in 2015 and a “30% chance” of going over the all-time UK temperature record of 38.5°C (101.3°F), which was recorded in Faversham in August 2003.

The sweltering heat is the result of an “African plume” sweeping in from the south and there will be high temperatures across Europe too.

The forecast for today is for some early low cloud and showers, but warm hazy sunshine will develop for most. Winds will be light and it will be a little fresher than yesterday. Maximum temperature 24°C.

Tomorrow will see hot sunshine. There will be thunderstorms overnight, then it will turn much fresher on Friday. Sunny spells and showers will then continue on Saturday.
