Right-wing media’s collective hysteria

-

WHY do we bother living if finally we all die? Why not “just get it done” and commit suicide?

This seems to be the twisted logic of the right-wing press. Denigrating MPs who have delayed a bill from passing before its proper assessment. Denigrating the judges for applying the rule of law. Denigrating the tradesmen, farmers and others who fear the trashing of their livelihoods.

Representative democracy applies people to elect others who are paid to spend time assessing the best path to follow, for whatever cause. This basic principle is being forgotten by certain sections of our society, notably the right-wing press.

A collective hysteria has infected the country where phrases such as “get it done” and “the will of the people” are chanted as a religious mantra.

Just as chanting a monotonous phrase over and over again is apparently a path to nirvana, so these chants, in the eyes of their believers, should deliver them to their Promised Land, steamrolling common sense and reason. And yet only one poll out of 74 recent polls showed a majority for leaving the EU. It is time for the process to return to “square one”, to reset society, either by a referendum or election, or preferably, both.

In less enlightened times the events we have seen would have resulted in bloodshed. Unless we’re careful, history will repeat itself, for which the right-wing press must bear considerable responsibility. Siôn Griffiths Aberystwyth
