Imagine Corbyn as leader in 1940

- Stephen Burley Cardiff

IT’S 1940 and the might of the German army has barnstormed through Europe in a breeze. They are now just across the Channel in France and poised to crush our far from sturdy defences.

Nothing appears to be capable of stopping their bloody rampage, and our prospects appear grim.

What transpired is now etched in history. Great Britain had an inspired and fearless leader who had little time for appeasement. The country famously as one pulled together and eventually we and our allies won a great victory.

Now just imagine if Jeremy Corbyn had been leading the country in 1940. It really does not bear thinking about, does it? Labour capitulation in the general election surprised no one. The Corbyn version of socialism, and his idiotic manifesto, sent shivers down the spines of true Labour supporters.

The Labour Party of old carried no grudge; ethnicity and creed were catered for. National health was top priority and jobs were plentiful.

The Labour Party of 2019 is a disgrace and embarrassment.

Their policies are old hat and unworkable.

Who would ever have thought that anti-Semitism had infiltrated the party?

The abject failure of Corbyn to stamp it out and dismiss the protagonists reminded us of a dark period in our history when the odious and ludicrous Oswald Mosley tried to emulate the fascism that was running wild in Europe.

Prior to the election, I found it remarkable how many people including myself uttered the remark: “I am Labour through and through but I am not voting for that fool Corbyn.”

On reflection and with the benefit of hindsight, the appointment of Corbyn as Labour leader was akin to political suicide, and set the party back decades.

The Tories were very unpopular and with a charismatic, confident leader, Labour would have romped home. Alas, no such person was available.

Boris Johnson is an awful alternative and this privileged posh boy is no friend of liberal thinking.

Nonetheless I think we can feel relatively safe with the solid working relationship Johnson has with Donald Trump.

Whatever your opinion of the US President we more than ever need the USA as our greatest ally in these unsettled times.

Corbyn’s namby-pamby stance on defence was frightening.

Thankfully we have no Hitler to overcome today, but the bullying, posturing Vladimir Putin and might of Russia are never to be underestimated.

So defence, like it nor not, is a priority. A sad conclusion for diehard socialists, but at least Boris Johnson has no plans to turn us into Venezuela.
