Hundreds of walkers head for the hills to catch the sunrise

-

HUNDREDS of walkers climbed south Wales’ highest peak early yesterday morning – to catch a glimpse of a stunning sunrise.

And pictures from Pen y Fan captured by photographer Mark Lewis show it was certainly worth the effort.

He visited the area as part of a New Year’s resolution to visit the Brecon Beacons at least once a month.

Mark said: “I went up there at about 6am – I couldn’t park at 6.30am.

“It was full up, and when I got to the top it was rammed. There were loads of people up there.”

He said the area was full of people watching the sunrise and having cups of tea.

People were taking pictures, having selfies and simply taking in the breathtaking views.

The pictures capture just how beautiful the scene was from the colour of the sky and the dusting of snow on the mountain tops.

“At 7am there was definitely about 250 on the mountain,” he added. “It was lovely. It was nice and crisp but not too cold. Some parts were a bit icy, but it was really lovely.”

The images came as the Met Office said the cold snap would continue in Wales this week.

Temperatures as low as -5˚C were forecast for today and tomorrow as the nation continues to be struck by a jet of high pressure.

According to the Met Office, this system means the climate is more settled and the lack of cloud enables temperatures to plummet – especially during the night.

The coldest area overnight on Saturday and into the early hours of yesterday was Trawsgoed near Aberystwyth, where it hit -4.9˚C.

However, it should begin to get somewhat milder as the week goes on as clouds start to move in – although temperatures will remain in the single digits.

After chilly days today and tomorrow, Wednesday is likely to be a fairly cloudy day with a few patches of rain but temperatures are still only expected to reach about 8˚C in most parts of Wales. Overnight it will drop to around 4-5˚C. Thursday is looking cloudy but potentially brighter.

Despite the cold temperatures, the Met Office said it’s unlikely Wales will see any snow.
