Young’s new deal delights Keates

-

LUKE Young is confident that brighter times lie ahead for Wrexham after committing his immediate future to the Dragons.

A trigger to allow the extension in the 27-year-old’s contract has been activated, allowing both parties to agree to a further 12 months until the end of the 2020-21 season..

Wrexham currently find themselves in a relegation battle at the foot of the National League table, the Dragons sitting in 17th place ahead of the weekend trip to promotion-chasing Yeovil and just two points above the drop zone.

Young is well aware of the perils facing the Dragons, having suffered relegation from the fifth tier in the 2017-18 season with Torquay, but believes Wrexham can edge away from the bottom four over their remaining 11 games.

“First and foremost, the aim is to be safe and make sure we’re in this league next year,” said Young.

“With the players under contract already, we’ve got a good spine (for next season). We’ve got a good amount of players to work with and the players the gaffer has brought in have been positive.

“Promotion is still the long-term goal. We can only concentrate on what we’re doing now, and that is staying in this league, but if we can push on now, it sets us up nicely for a good pre-season.”

A season of consistent performances has seen Young as a contender for player of the year, the popular Devon-born midfielder having made 39 appearances for the club this campaign and scoring three goals - including a stunning winner over Bromley at home in November.

This term builds on an impressive showing last season when Young made 48 appearances in all competitions and collected the Steve Edwards Goal of the Season Trophy for his long-range effort against Dagenham & Redbridge.

On extending his stay at the Racecourse for a further season, Young added: “I’ve been fortunate enough to play as many games as I have, to stay injury-free and be fit – it’s probably been the most consistent season I’ve had for a while. I can’t have too many complaints on a personal note.

“The incentive was there to play as many games as I can, and I’ve reaped the rewards with another year’s contract.”

Wrexham boss Dean Keates was delighted by agreement, and hailed the contribution and professionalism of the midfielder.

“I’m glad he’s staying,” said Keates. “Since I’ve been in charge, he has been one of the most consistent players.

“I love everything about him the way he plays, and what the fans see, is exactly how he trains.

“He’s a pro, and as a personality he is everything I want at the football club.”
