GO WITH THE FLOW
A NEW app claims to cut the risk of depression – by helping users switch to a Mediterranean diet, high in fruit, veg, nuts, beans and whole grains, moderate on dairy and poultry and low on red meat.
Flow recommends foods that have been proven to boost mood and reveals psychological strategies to help switch off the craving mechanism.
The free app has been developed by Flow Neuroscience – the first and only medicallyapproved home brain stimulation treatment for depression in Europe.
A random controlled trial showed that more than 32% of people suffering from depression felt significantly better just 12 weeks after changing their eating habits.
CLEANING IS ‘AN ASTHMA RISK’
BEING exposed to cleaning products in the first three months of life can increase the risk of childhood asthma.
This is especially true if infants spend much of their life indoors, research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows.
Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease.
SMALL GLASS – LESS DRINK?
RESEARCHERS found that people who eat out in restaurants drink less when they are given a 300ml wine glass compared with a 370ml one.
But the same effect was not noticed in bars where people consumed the same amount regardless of glass size.
The authors, from the University of Cambridge, suggested that the effect might be more noticeable in restaurants as people are more likely to buy wine by the bottle or carafe, whereas in bars more wine is purchased by the glass.
