Biggar the latest worry ahead of Twickenham

-

WALES will assess Dan Biggar today as a potential injury crisis looms at fly-half ahead of Saturday’s Six Nations Championship clash with England at Twickenham

The 30-year-old playmaker was forced off the field 20 minutes into Northampton’s 27-21 Gallagher Premiership defeat by Saracens on Saturday with a knee injury.

Saints boss Chris Boyd has revealed Biggar’s injury was not thought to be serious, but he must “wait and see” on any lay-off.

“I don’t think it is serious,” Boyd told BBC Radio Northampton.

“He’s hyper-extended his leg in a collision and seems to be moving relatively okay.

“I don’t think he’s got any major structural damage from what I’m led to believe so it’s one of those ones we’ll wait and see.”

Cardiff Blues’ Jarrod Evans would be the favourite to start against England if Biggar is ruled out with Dragons’ Sam Davies possibly coming in as back-up.

Evans was Biggar’s deputy in the games against Italy, Ireland and France.

Biggar’s injury compounds Wales’ problems at No.10 with Gareth Anscombe a long-term absentee, while Scarlets’ Rhys Patchell has yet to return after shoulder surgery.

Wales also lost Gloucester’s Owen Williams to a hamstring injury for the whole Six Nations.

Biggar’s injury came a day after Hallam Amos failed a late fitness test on a knee injury before Cardiff Blues lost 14-6 at Edinburgh on Friday.

Josh Adams is out of the tournament and fellow wing George North is undergoing head injury protocols after he was forced off against France.

Amos had returned for Blues the previous week as they beat Benetton in the PRO14 but limped off late in the game.

He had not played since damaging ankle ligaments in January, but was called up by Wales boss Wayne Pivac before returning to regional action.

New Scarlets signing Liam Williams has yet to play since suffering an ankle injury at the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

Wales will reassemble today and look at the fitness of all the players ahead of the tough assignment at Twickenham.
